Learn about the advantages of dental implants compared with other
restorative dentistry solutions.

What Exactly Are
Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a time-tested solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide the highest level of stability and support of different dental restorations. The implant itself is an artificial titanium tooth root that is surgically inserted into the jawbone. This root is then topped by your choice of a crown, bridge, or dentures.

Implants Are Increasingly Popular

If you are struggling with missing teeth, know you are not alone. The average 50-year-old American has lost 12 teeth. The widespread epidemic of tooth loss causes many to turn to dental implants.

The American Academy of Implant Dentistry reports that approximately 3 million Americans have received dental implants. This number is expected to grow by 500,000 each year. A report in Forbes estimated that by 2026, 23% of all Americans will have dental implants in place.

Dr. Slaman Discusses the Basics
of Dental Implants

Replacing a tooth using this solution involves three components: implants, abutments, and restorations. Implant-supported restorations are the most stable solution for missing teeth because they replace the entire tooth from root to crown. For the right candidates, dental implants are the very best teeth replacement solution, providing excellent support and aesthetics.

Implants Help You Protect Your Oral Health

Did you know tooth loss can cause serious oral health problems? Many patients at our Albuquerque dental office hesitate at the thought of dental implants when nonsurgical tooth replacement alternatives are available. However, you must consider the important long-term health benefits that come with implant treatment:

Protect Your Jawbone

Traditional dental crowns, bridges, and dentures only replace the visible part of the tooth. Without a tooth root, the jaw will begin to atrophy (shrink and change shape). Dental implants act as prosthetic tooth roots, providing the stimulation necessary to prevent bone recession.

Maintain a Youthful Appearance

Patients who have been missing teeth for a long time may develop a sunken, aged facial appearance. Dental implants can help you retain a healthy-looking facial structure.

Prevent Oral Health Issues

Dental implants can correct your occlusion and prevent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and the loss of other teeth.

Preventing Bone Recession Is Critical

The importance of preventing jawbone recession cannot be stressed enough. When you are missing natural teeth, you lose the nourishment and stimulation they provide to your jaw health. This leads to shrinking and bone loss.

The Effects of Bone Loss in the Jaw

Over time, these side effects cause drastic changes to your face such as wrinkling and sunken-looking cheeks and mouth. To make matters worse, jawbone atrophy endangers other teeth and heightens your risk of serious health issues like oral infection, gum disease, and even heart disease.

Another Compelling Reason to Get Dental Implants

There is only one restorative dentistry solution that can prevent jawbone recession by providing the stimulation your jaw needs – dental implants. By receiving implants from our dentist, you can maintain the appearance of your facial features and increase the likelihood of avoiding many critical health conditions.

Implant-Supported Dentures Are a Life-Changing Solution for Tooth Loss

implant-supported dentures
If you wear dentures, you understand how frustrating it can be trying to keep them securely in place as you chew and speak. Meanwhile, they constantly need adjustments to accommodate changes in your jaw and avoid irritating your gums. Implant dentures eliminate these problems so you can eat any foods you want, speak with absolute clarity, and maintain an excellent fit. Talk to Dr. Slaman about how this solution can allow you to stop suffering and start enjoying a better quality of life.

We Restore Teeth With Same-Day Implants

Often, Dr. Slaman can place an implant-supported restoration on the same day as your implant surgery. Traditionally, placing and restoring dental implants is a process that can span more than six months. However, if we find that you are a candidate for same-day implants, we can coordinate with area specialists to both place your implant and attach a restoration in one day.

During your consultation with Dr. Slaman, we will assess your oral health, your specific oral health needs, and other factors to determine if you qualify for a same-day implant and restoration.

What Do Dental Implants Cost?

The price of dental implants can vary significantly from one patient to the next, depending on several factors: the number of implants you need, the type of restoration you require, and any treatments that will have to be performed prior to receiving your implants. In order to get a precise cost estimate, Dr. Slaman will first need to assess your smile and oral health at our Albuquerque, NM, practice.

Implants are not covered by insurance, but your restorations and any necessary bone grafting might qualify. We offer CareCredit® financing to help you budget for any out-of-pocket costs.

Are Dental Implants Worth the Money?

While there’s no doubt that dental implants are a considerable investment, the benefits far outweigh the costs.

By addressing the issue of missing teeth now, you can prevent the need for repeated, costly oral health interventions. It is also possible that your implants will help avoid life-threatening conditions that would require skyrocketing medical bills to treat.

High Rates of Satisfaction from Patients with Dental Implants

When patients themselves are asked about their implant results, the overwhelming majority say they are truly satisfied.

In a 2021 study, nearly 100 dental implant recipients were surveyed a full 10 years after receiving their implants. Every single one reported a high level of satisfaction with their implant-supported restoration, with an average general satisfaction rate of 93%.

The Treatment Timeline

In some cases, Dr. Slaman can place an implant-supported restoration on the same day as your implant surgery.

Anesthetic & Sedation

Local anesthetic is used to minimize any discomfort at the treatment site. Oral conscious sedation might also be used to help patients achieve a deeply relaxed state of near-sleep.

Implant Surgery

Next, incisions are placed in the gums and the titanium implants are placed in the jawbone. As you heal over the next four to six months, the implants will fuse to the jaw in a process called osseointegration.

Temporary Restoration

While you are healing, you will wear a temporary restoration.  In the meantime, Dr. Slaman will work with our partner lab to craft your permanent restoration.

After osseointegration is complete, you will undergo a second minor surgery to place abutments. Abutments connect your implant-supported restoration to the titanium implants.

Final Placement

In a few weeks, after your gums have healed, you will be ready for your permanent restoration. Dr. Slaman will check the appearance and fit of the implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture and make any necessary adjustments before attaching the restoration securely to your abutments.

Receive Comfortable Treatment From a Dentist Who Truly Cares

The Results Are Incredibly Natural-Looking

Dental Implants Are Reliable

Dental implants are truly life-changing. Their importance has led to extensive research into their efficacy. In study after study, dental implants are found to have an approximately 95% success rate.

Implants Are Also Long-Lasting

Natural teeth are at risk for decay and other dental problems. Sturdy titanium dental implants are not susceptible to these same issues. Patients who maintain good oral health and hygiene can expect their implant screw to last a lifetime. Dr. Slaman is happy to guide you to optimal oral health through routine cleanings and regular check-ups at his Albuquerque office.

It is important to note that your restoration will likely need replacing at some point. For example, an implant-supported crown typically must be replaced about 10-15 years after placement.

"Great friendly staff

Preparatory Dental Procedures What if my jaw can't support implants?

Some patients may require preparatory procedures before they can receive implants. Patients who require this treatment have generally been missing teeth for an extended period of time, resulting in jawbone deterioration. A bone graft can replace lost bone tissue in the jaw to create a stable foundation for implants. If your sinuses are too close to the treatment area, a sinus lift can reposition the soft tissues by adding bone tissue to the upper jaw and making it possible to accommodate implants.

Consider All-on-4 Implants and Skip Preparatory Treatment

If you have already suffered significant jaw recession from tooth loss, you may be able to forgo a bone graft thanks to All-on-4 dental implants. Taking this approach, four implants can support a complete denture; they are placed at special angles to achieve maximum contact with remaining bone tissue, which helps many who would otherwise require a bone graft experience the benefits of dental implants right away. An added advantage of this option is the fact that they can often support a denture immediately following placement.

Dr. Slaman can assess your candidacy for All-on-4 during a consultation at his Albuquerque office.
