Preserve Your Oral Health with Gentle Tooth Extraction

It is always preferable to save a natural tooth whenever possible. In some cases, however, removing the tooth is the best option for preserving your oral health. Dr. James Slaman can perform a simple tooth extraction at our Albuquerque, NM, dental office using gentle techniques, comfortable oral conscious sedation, and various tooth replacement options to complete your treatment. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Slaman is well-equipped to handle all of your dental needs.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are a few different reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted. Occasionally, the jawbone is too small for the teeth. This can lead to overcrowding and other complications. A tooth may also be trapped, or impacted, either fully or partially in the bone. These are both common scenarios in which Dr. Slaman may recommend a tooth extraction. In addition, a tooth that is too decayed or damaged for a filling or other restoration may need to be removed. In general, if the long-term prognosis is poor, or if leaving the tooth could cause further damage to your oral health, an extraction is often the most effective treatment option.

What to Expect during Your Appointment

During your appointment with Dr. Slaman, he will first perform a series of diagnostic tests to determine if an extraction is the best course of action. In all instances, he will attempt to save the natural tooth. In addition to a visible assessment, Dr. Slaman may also perform digital diagnostic imaging with our GALILEOS® ComfortPLUS cone beam scanner, which can help him evaluate the underlying structures, such as the roots and supporting jawbone.

At Dr. Slaman & Associates, we strive to deliver top-tier care for those in our community.

If an extraction is recommended, Dr. Slaman will discuss your sedation options with you. For those with dental anxiety, nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation can be administered for your comfort. During the procedure, the tooth is gently rocked back and forth in the socket until it is ready to extract. Finally, Dr. Slaman will carefully remove the tooth, place any necessary stitches, and send you home to begin your recovery.
